It is very important to note the difference between the REPAIR or RESTORATION , and the CONSERVATION of a stained glass panel.
Leadlights may be repaired or restored by a competent and experienced leadlight craftsman, of whom there are many among our members.
Stained glass needs the attention and skills of someone who specialises in the repair, restoration and conservation of stained glass panels, and who will follow the principles and guidelines set down for the care of Australia's Monuments and Sites in the Australian ICOMOS Burra Charter. It is a much more complex task, and often involves researching the original artist and processes, undertaking a condition report prior to commencement of any work, finding glass that matches the existing, and painting (if repainting is even desirable) in the style of the original work.
We cannot stress enough, the importance of conservation work being undertaken only by a skilled professional experienced in this area. If you have a piece of stained glass that needs attention, AGDA would be happy to refer you to an appropriate contact for assessment.
The following shows a "St.Dorcas" window by William Montgomery (1850-1927) in Christ Church Warrnambool, with a painting replication completed by one of our highly skilled members in 2004. The first picture shows the damaged panel, and the following picture displays the careful restoration work carried out.
