Are Leadlights Legal ?

Since the proposed changes to Australian Standards 1288 in 2002, and the subsequent consultation with our industry and adoption of the new Standard in 2006, some misperceptions have arisen, particularly within the building and glazing industries. The main one is that leadlights are somehow "illegal" under AS1288 - nothing could be further from the truth.

The main change to leadlight regulations during the review of 1288, was that the size of any one piece of 3mm glass within a leadlight panel was reduced, in areas subject to human impact. The change was made in the interest of safety if someone should happen to fall against a piece of leadlight and glass should break.

This is unlikely, as by the nature of its web-like construction leadlight panels are stronger than a single piece of 3mm glass, and impact studies have been undertaken which back this up. Research undertaken by AGDA during the course of the review period, failed to discover ANY human deaths caused by breakage of leadlight, nor any severe accidents, either in Australia or overseas.

Therefore you can safely use leadlight in your home or commercial buidling, and the versatility of the medium means that it can be designed to suit a period home or a state of the art contemporary building, and everything in between.

AGDA members are well aware of the AS1288 regulations, and can supply you with leadlight that complies completely.
